25 Heatless Hairstyles You Can Do in Under Five Minutes

Long hair being twisted into a heatless style

Heat is the fastest way to damage hair and the slowest to recover from. The good news is that most of the styles people reach for hot tools to achieve can be done without them — often better, and usually faster once you have the technique.

These are grouped by time, because that is how anyone actually chooses a hairstyle on a weekday morning.

Under sixty seconds

1. The claw clip twist. Gather, twist upward, clip. The single highest ratio of effect to effort in hairdressing.

2. Low sleek ponytail. Brush back, secure at the nape, wrap a small section around the elastic to hide it.

3. Half-up half-down. Top section only, clipped or tied. Works on every length past the shoulders.

4. Messy bun. High ponytail, twist, wrap, secure. Pull a few pieces loose afterwards — the deliberate imperfection is what makes it read as intentional.

5. The headband tuck. Wide fabric headband, tuck the ends underneath as you go.

6. Deep side part. Nothing but a comb and a change of parting. Adds visible volume at the root instantly.

7. Two-clip pull-back. Small claw clips on each side, hair swept back from the temples.

Two to three minutes

8. Three-strand braid, worn low and pulled loose at the edges. 9. Dutch braid for a raised, more textured line. 10. Fishtail braid, which looks harder than it is: two sections, small pieces crossed over. 11. Braided half-up. 12. Twisted crown — two twists brought round and pinned at the back.

13. Bubble ponytail. A row of small elastics down the length, each section pulled wide. 14. Ballerina bun. 15. Low chignon, twisted and pinned flat. 16. Scarf-wrapped ponytail. 17. Space buns, which suit shorter hair better than people expect.

Four to five minutes

18. Double Dutch braids. 19. Braided bun — braid first, then coil and pin. 20. Halo braid wrapped fully around the head. 21. Twisted low bun using two rope twists. 22. Knotted half-up, tying two sections in a literal knot rather than using an elastic.

Overnight, for next-day texture

23. The robe-belt curl. Damp hair wrapped around a soft belt or heatless curling rod, secured at both ends. Loose waves by morning with no heat at all.

24. Two loose braids on damp hair. The most reliable beach wave available. Tighter braids give tighter waves.

25. Damp bun. One high, loosely twisted bun. Gives soft bend through the lengths with a straighter root.

Four things that make all of these work better

Second-day hair holds better than clean hair. Freshly washed hair is slippery. If you are styling on wash day, a little texture spray or dry shampoo at the roots gives you grip.

Use the right elastics. Spiral coils and fabric-covered ties cause dramatically less breakage than thin rubber bands, particularly at the same spot every day. Vary where you tie it.

Loosen everything after you finish. Gently pull at the edges of braids and twists. Tight and precise reads severe; softened reads expensive.

Sleep on silk or satin. It preserves overnight styles and cuts the friction that causes frizz and breakage. It is the cheapest meaningful upgrade in haircare.
